Back to R1b

Project members falling into the CTS4466 subclades can improve the data on this and the Pedigrees page through EXPERT LEVEL PARTICIPATION. Project cluster numbers for these members start at 2200.

Subclade CTS4466 of R1b had at one time been called South Irish and was once considered a distinctly Irish haplotype that originated in the southern half of the island. That view has shifted a bit, though a number of subclades certainly seemed to have emerged from there.

Project members willing to commit financially to doing more Y testing of SNPs should join the R-CTS4466 haplogroup project.

Surnames came into being early in the second millennium. From the estimated formation dates and TMRCAs of CTS4466 and the relevant downstream SNPs (see SNP Calendar below), we can see that our CTS4466 Collins project members shared a common paternal CTS4466 ancestor early in the first millennium, but could not have shared a common ancestor named Collins. This is certainly a polygenetic surname.

R-CTS4466 clusters within the project's private Y results are numbered starting at Cluster 2200.

Estimates for R-CTS4466 change frequently. Check FTDNA or Scaled Innovation for the current estimates.

CTS4466 is positioned under FGC11134, and is, for the time being, its largest subclade discovered by far. CTS4466 has a dense presence in Southern Ireland, with numerous subclades appearing to emerge from that region.

At the time of publication, some SNPs downstream from CTS4466 are not in ISOGG's SNP tree or dated by YFull. ISOGG is four years behind updating the long forms.

The project has so far identified three substreams of interest under R-CTS4466. They are from the province of Munster in Ireland.

The first, shown on the map below with a terminal point at BY2881, shows some presence in Limerick.

The second, with a terminal point at BY42829, is a self contained pedigree originating from Castlehaven parish, just outside Skibbereen. An ancestor to this cluster is dated from about 1787, but so far no relatives have turned up beyond the DNA testing of descendants to this known ancestor. Y-DNA testing has made up for the complete loss of relevant marriage and baptism records that would tie the branches of this family together.

The third, with a terminal point at BY90872, is a near pedigree outside Drimoleague; a common ancestor cannot be established due to limited records that do not start until the late 1810's. These testers have somewhat more distant matches from further east - Dunmanway, and maybe Clonakilty. This substream appears to have split off from people now named Daly, about 1200 CE.

The locations pinned on the map are partly based on the genealogical data provided by project members and partly based on the location data at Scaled Innovation (Rob Spencer). Time period estimates are color coded based on Scaled Innovation.

The Collins Haplotypes

The table below shows three modals extracted out of Collins project data for each of the three subclades listed above, compared to an Irish Type II MODAL haplotype borrowed from the Munster Irish project.
