Subclade M223 of I2a was formed approximately 15000 BCE, and has a solid uniform distribution through Europe. There are dense spots in Sweden, Germany, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Project members willing to commit financially to doing more Y testing of SNPs should join the I-M223 haplogroup project.

They are in Clusters 1006 and 1002. The common ancestor SNP is S2364, with a TMRCA about 2200 BCE. Since surnames came into being early in the second millennium, these Collinses acquired their surnames in different ways. The surname is polygenetic. There have been significant changes to the subclade structure under I-M223. As a result, the old ISOGG long forms, not updated since 2020, are no longer valid. The SNP calendar on this page has been stripped of ISOGG long forms. TMRCA dates particularly in the older parent SNPs have been pushed back further in time. Note there are still some SNP knowledge gaps within the last 2 millennia. I-M223 Collinses constitute some 7% of project members. The L1272 > YP5717 members make up the majority of I-M223 members in the project.

Project members falling under I-M223 can improve the data on this page through expert level participation. Cluster 1002 in particular has some data that can be compared, given sufficient participation.
