Herewith presented a map of the relative distribution of the Collins surname in the 1841 England and Wales census, based on preliminary estimates.
The 1841 census was chosen so as to capture the state of England and Wales prior to population movements as a consequence of the Irish famine. The surname shows broad distribution. The name is likely polygenetic, having multiple sources.
Counties with the greatest concentrations of people named Collins relative to the other counties are - Middlesex (includes London); Lancashire (includes the port of Liverpool); then Yorkshire; Surrey; Kent; and Hampshire, in that order.
The next tier of concentration occurs in Devon; Essex; Somerset; Cornwall; Sussex; Gloucestershire; and Warwickshire, in that order.
